Renick Stevenson Biography

Born in Seminole Oklahoma on January 11, 1936, Renick Stevenson lives in Merrill, Michigan now. A self-professed student of life Renick considers his major accomplishments as being appointed the First Artist-in-Residence for San Jose State College in the 60's and later, for the Kellogg Foundation in the 90's.

He is an optimist and describes his time in Jacksonville Beach:

"of the 3 years spent here the first 6 or 8 months maybe 9 as living in seclusion, a new world after 25 years in the mountains� in a closet if you will, like a stranger in a strange land..."

Renick found his poetic voice in the connection he made in coffee houses and caught the "caring connectedness of poets, a beacon sending out signals from isolated way stations to let others know it is safe to send a signal... that someone somewhere will get it."

In these friendships that Renick developed with kindred spirits, he found

"a chance for honest heart talk, not esoteric bullshit, some laughing, some crying, my autumn equinox pohm/poum/paum. My leaves are falling falling off and i am isolated on an open space where the wind blows and if your roots don't go deep enough you fall."

Renick expanded from the canvas to the printed word, exploring a new landscape using words for his colors.
