Mary Lou Sutherlin was born in Ft. Wayne, Indiana on July 28, 1944, she has since lived in North Manchester, Indiana; Huntington, Indiana; Denver, Colorado;
Crothersville, Indiana; Grand Rapids, Michigan; New York, New York; Macon, Georgia and Jacksonville, Florida where she now resides in Riverside with two humans
and numerous feline companions.
Sutherlin attended Chester Township Grade School and North Manchester High School for the first 10 years of her formal education. She graduated from Lancaster
Township High School in 1962. She then attended Purdue University in Indiana and discovered the joys of auditing classes at the City College of New York.
She has spent most of her life learning from books and living beings, as she believes that learning is living. (And vice - versa)
She won a National Science Foundation scholarship to study chemistry at Western State College in Gunnison, Colorado in 1962. Later, she began a career with Vistakon,
a division of Johnson and Johnson. During her stay at Vistakon, she received Honorable Mention in a nationwide publicity campaign for Savings Bonds with her poetry
which resulted in a paid trip to Washington D.C. to receive her award in person. Mary Lou was also active and instrumental in the development of the Accuvue contact
lenses during her career at Vistakon.
She has two younger sisters, three surviving children, several grandchildren and a few great-grandchildren.
